how to wash zwd... and what to do with the container

now available at Zero Waste Daniel in the Broadway Market \ 483 Broadway, NYC

You don't buy your clothes at a grocery store...why buy your detergent there? Thanks to Lauren Singer, we now have the perfect detergent for you, and now you can buy it at our retail location at the Broadway Market in Soho!

Using the recommended amount of detergent for your machine and laundry needs, flip your zwd pieces inside out, and wash on cold with your regular load. Hang, or lay flat to dry. Never use machine heat, and do not bleach.

Lauren Singer, founder of The Simply Co. and Trash is for Tossers, created the perfect detergent to wash zwd. Lauren lives a zero waste life, and as such, her detergent reflets the core principals of ZWD. Made from just 3 ingredients, and packaged with zero waste, the detergent is strong enough to clean zwd thoroughly right along with your other laundry in a conventional washing machine, and keep your pieces looking and smelling fresh.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons fresh ginger root, sliced into rounds

  • 1/4 peach, sliced (see below for when the last peaches of summer are gone!)

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1/2 lemon, juiced

  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Start by slicing up your peach/s (you can easily do a few days worth of peaches in advance) and put the pieces in a reusable, air-tight container. Freeze overnight.
  2. In your The Simply Co. mason jar, combine the ginger, honey, cayenne, and lemon juice. Put the lid on the jar, and refrigerate overnight.
  3. In the morning, bring 3 cups of water to a boil, and pour over your prepared refrigerated ingredients. Let steep while you go about your morning (about 15 minutes.)
  4. When you are ready to enjoy, pop in the frozen peaches to bring the tea to the perfect drinking temperature.

note: this stuff gets better with time, so if you decide to take a break, try putting a lid on it and putting it in the refrigerator. Later, you can transfer to a microwave safe mug, or enjoy over-ice; try adding with a splash of ginger beer or club soda for an extra kick.

seasonal adaptation: when the last peaches of summer are gone, use orange juice to make an ice cube in your regular ice trays, and add 1/8 of a teaspoon of ground cloves to the mix.
