behind the scenes: THE CANARY AND THE UGLY DUCKLING
Hello blog!
Here is another post towards everyone's favorite blog series: behind-the-scenes of Sustainable Fashion is a Cabaret!! This post I am going to delve into the looks and performances of the amazing Joshua Holden and the charmingly grumpy Mr. Nicholas at my NYFW show!
Broadway puppeteer Joshua Holden, alongside his soulmate and right-hand-man Mr. Nicholas, performed in the cabaret I produced for NYFW to showcase my new collection. Joshua took the stage in a vibrant orange all-over-reroll pant, tank top, and cropped bomber jacket, complete with a matching conductor hat. The jacket was adorned with a one-of-a-kind handmade orange floral brooch (available for purchase). I titled this look The Canary because of it's bold color, and the multitude of symbolism canaries are known for in western culture. From environmental awareness, to joy, optimism, resilience, and frivolity.
After a scathing song and throughout some playful dialogue, a skeptical Mr. Nicholas was gradually won over as Joshua explained the magic of sustainable fashion made from scrap fabrics, and how similar it is to the origin story of Mr. Nicholas himself (who is made from an old sock and a used yogurt container). By the end of the set, Mr. Nicholas sported his very own matching orange outfit, which made him feel absolutely beautiful! His look is titled The Ugly Duckling as a reference to Mr. Nicholas' journey to find beauty within and become a swan.
The hat Joshua wore is the result of a collaboration between me and couture hat designer Albrizio, based in Brooklyn, NY, and our neighbors here at 257 Varet street!
In my newest collection inspired by the cabaret, the companion piece to The Canary and the Ugly Duckling look is a black patchwork sweatshirt with depictions of swans, canaries, and ducklings! The ugly duckling + the swan crewneck is available on the Zero Waste Daniel website in sizes XS to 3XL. Each one is handmade by me in my Brooklyn studio.
