behind the scenes: THE SONGBIRD

Well hello there!
The next installment in my series detailing each look from my NYFW show, Sustainable Fashion is a Cabaret, is about The Songbird look worn by Broadway star Alexandra Socha!

For the first performance of the night, the enchanting Alexandra Socha, currently captivating audiences as Glinda in Broadway's Wicked, took the stage to open the show. As she began to sing "Gorgeous" by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick from the quirky 1960s musical 'The Apple Tree,' she wore an over-the-top coat adorned with layers of luxurious organza and leather feathers that flowed gracefully to the floor, transitioning from a delicate blush to a deep crimson and back to blush again.

With a dramatic gesture, Alexandra ripped open the coat to reveal a sleek, form-fitting red sequined dress beneath, shimmering like starlight. In my opinion, the epitome of cabaret. As she dropped the coat to the ground, she stood with a classic beauty reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour. The dress, crafted from sequined knit fabrics, hugged her figure perfectly, allowing for effortless movement.

The feathered coat, coming in at a whopping 9 pounds, featured a unique "leather skeleton" base that follows the lines of a traditional coat. This innovative design kept the weight of the coat manageable while showcasing the exquisite feather appliqués that created the breathtaking final look and allowed some light to shine through. The combination of artistry and sustainable fashion on that stage truly felt like a moment of magic. Check out this video to learn about my process and this post to see Alexandra's full performance! and I'm not being paid to say this, but you have until march to run to the Gershwin and see her absolutely GORGEOUS performance as Glinda!

The companion piece to this look is The Songbird crewneck sweatshirt, a more subtle take on the vibrant red dress and coat. Get your own Songbird crewneck in sizes XS to 3XL. I hand make each sweatshirt to order in my Brooklyn studio!
